Ever since Marvel announced its release slate for the next five-years, everyone presumed it would eventually lead up to an Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy crossover. James Gunn has been asked about this numerous times as of late, especially while he has been on the promotional circuit pushing the Blu-ray and dvd release of his film. In interviews, Gunn always comes across as being very protective of the world and characters he has created in Guardians Of The Galaxy, so when there are ever any questions about a crossword within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he always seems pretty despondent about the whole concept of the Avengers and the Guardians teaming up. However, given that they are the Guardians of the Galaxy; it would make more sense to give Gunn more time for the fans to explore his characters and their motives in more detail, and to explore the Galaxy that they are protecting. Therefore, it’s understandable at this point in time that Gunn‘s mindset is nowhere near, even contemplating how the crossover is going to come about at this point in time. After all, he has only just recently started work on the Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
James Gunn is not only talented behind the camera, he is also a likeable guy who has a lot of time for his fans, so as he is still rockin the promotional circuit, he sat down with Screen Junkies and agreed to answer a plethora of questions from fans. A lot of the questions were pretty standardized affair such as: what are some of your favorite scenes?; what characters are returning in the sequel?; who are your favorite characters?, and, …yeah – more questions of that inclination. However, there was one question that raised more than a few eyebrows; a question based on the odds of a crossover happening with the mighty Avengers. Gunn’s answer may not have been what everyone was expecting (maybe even including Kevin Feige!). However, he has opened up slightly more about the concept and been kind enough to offer his thoughts on the idea.
Now that we have confirmation that the Infinity War will split into two parts in 2018 and 2019, and that the Russo Brothers are set to direct both parts of the colossal series, we all presumed that the Guardians would come down to Earth to help the Avengers fight off Thanos and his army, and prevent the destruction of the planet. But Gunn has made a very valid point, reminding the fans that his band of anti-heroes inhabit a completely different world than the rest of the Marvel universe, and that the crossover might not occur exactly the way fans are expecting. Here is Gunn’s response:
“We really are separate from the Avengers, and I don’t think people should assume too many things about the Guardians play in all these. We have our own galaxy to take care of. We have our own galaxy to save. Earth is the Avengers’ province. Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it’s going to happen.”
With the Box Office success of Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers, it would make sense from a monetary perspective to combine the two at some point, no? As Gunn is very clever with his words, he could be hinting at the crossover happening from two different perspectives; one from Earth, where the Avengers are battling it out; and one from Space, where the Guardians are doing their part to help out the team. Also, there is still the possibility that a crossover might not happen at all, but that could lead to another battle between Gunn and Feige.
It is possible that Gunn is just inferring that the Guardians aren’t gonna fly down, meet the Avengers, do battle with them, then go for a cuppa. Hinting at a more unconventional approach.
