Recently, when Christian Bale was asked how he initially felt when he heard about Ben Affleck taking over the role of Batman, he admitted that he harbored some serious FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). That’s understandable, as Bale turned in a terrific performance in Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight trilogy (despite the mixed reaction about the gravely voice), and being a method actor, he must have invested a lot of emotionally charged energy into the role of Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego, Batman.

Here is the full quote from Bale – taken from an interview with Empire magazine – in which he states that he “stopped and stared into nothing for half an hour” (…hmm, that sounds more like the actions of Patrick Bateman), anyway, here it is:

I’ve got to admit initially, even though I felt that it was the right time to stop [being Batman], there was always a bit of me going, ‘Oh go on… Let’s do another.’ So when I heard there was someone else doing it, there was a moment where I just stopped and stared into nothing for half an hour.

Christian Bale has always came across as quite an intense individual, one only has to listen to his tirade on set of Terminator Salvation, when Shane Hurlbut – Director of Photography – reportedly walked behind co-star Bryce Dallas Howard and through Bale’s line of sight.

Keaton on the other hand, seems like a rather chilled out bloke (…now I don’t know them, so this is strictly based on anecdotal hearsay). During an interview with Shortlist, here is what he had to say about Batman, Tim Burton and superhero movies in general:

Tim changed, or started, everything. And I’m proud of the choice I made, in terms of how to play Batman. It’s probably easier now because Tim paved the way, and if I did anything to pave the way, I’m proud of that, too. I’ve never seen [a superhero movie] beginning to end. Oh actually, I saw the first Spider-Man – I thought that was really good. You can step into it more easily now, is my guess. Technically, [superhero movies] do everything for you. They create a world where all you’ve basically got to do is show up, not f*ck it up too much and you’ll come off OK.

Now, there’s nothing like saving the best until last! When Shortist asked “The Keatonator“:

Christian Bale recently said he felt jealous to see Ben Affleck wearing the cape and cowl – do you ever get that?

His response was:

No. Do you know why? Because I’m Batman. I’m very secure in that.

*BOOM, there’s your dinner*

The end.
