It’s really coming together isn’t it. As Daredevil wraps principal photography, and as A.K.A. Jessica Jones looks to finally go into production, Marvel Studios has announced the star of its next contribution to binge TV on Netflix, the titular star of Luke Cage. It’s been rumored for a while, but now confirmed, that Mike Colter will play the part of the nearly indestructible gangbanger turned Hero for Hire. With that casting announcement, Marvel is now just one superhero short of fulfilling its contract to Netflix, Cage’s regular partner in crimefighting, Iron Fist. In the meantime though, if you think you’ll have to wait to premiere of Luke Cage in order to see Luke Cage, don’t worry, he’s going to have a significant role to play in another series…
So first of all, this news comes from Marvel itself, meaning it’s straight-up legit. Colter, who’s name has been brandied about for a while as a potential Luke Cage, was mentioned in passing when Krysten Ritter was cast as the title character in A.K.A. Jessica Jones; the characters needed to be cast in relative tandem because of the romance between Cage and Jones in the comics. Indeed, part of the news in this announcement is that Colter will have a recurring role in Jones before, in essence, being spun-off into his own Netflix series:
During the course of an investigation in New York, private investigator Jessica Jones encounters the enigmatic Luke Cage — a man whose past has secrets that will dramatically alter Jessica herself in ways she could never have imagined.
Like becoming Luke Cage’s baby mama, but I digress. Colter may be known to nerdy audiences already for his role as Locke in Halo: Nightfall. He’s also had roles in Men in Black 3, Salt, and Zero Dark Thirty, and has appeared on TV shows like Ringer, The Following, and The Good Wife.
“Mike embodies the strength, edge and depth of Luke Cage,” said Executive Producer/Showrunner of A.K.A. Jessica Jones Melissa Rosenberg. “We’re excited to have him bring this iconic Marvel character to life.”
“Fans have longed to see Luke Cage and in Mike we’ve found the perfect actor,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television. “Viewers will get to meet Luke Cage in ‘Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,’ and experience why he is such an important super hero in the Marvel mythos.”
Now the question remains, who will fill the yellow slippers of Iron Fist? Consider the casting of Colter, Ritter and Charlie Cox as Daredevil, one thing is certain, it’s probably not going to be anyone we’re already thinking about for the part. And, in another important note, we still don’t know yet who’s going to be showrunner on Luke Cage. With casting of the (power) man now in place, that should be the next, big piece of news to come out about the Netflix series of series.
Of course, we’ll have that news as it develops.
