Next year after the release of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we will have more of an idea of where the franchise is going with Rian Johnson’s (The Brothers Bloom, Looper) Star Wars: Episode VIII and Episode IX going into pre-production . However, the films that will remain fairly elusive are the planned spin-offs, which will be released in between the J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson’s films. There are three projects – two which will be directed by Gareth Edwards, and one by Josh Trank – that could be potentially set at any point in the Star Wars timeline and could follow many different directions and branch out into an infinite number of stories. A rumor that has been running rampant the last couple of years, has been the speculation that one of the spin-offs could center on a Han Solo adventure, and the rumor has just been given a boost following a report that it is, in fact, true.
The report has come from the folks at Making Star Wars, who have claimed they have attained insider information surrounding the proposed Han Solo spin-off movie. The information states that the project currently falls under the codename Luminac Industrial Goods, and that there will be some overlap in production during the filming of Star Wars: Episode VIII. Furthermore, the report has Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad, Need for Speed) involved in the project; with no specific information as to whom he might be playing in the film. The source is said to be trustworthy by the folk at Making Star Wars as it was the same source who provided set photos from Star Wars: The Force Awakens – so the rumors are slightly more substantiated.
There are two reports about the Gareth Edwards spin-off, with one stating that the film will be based on a heist that would see a team of rebel alliance-hired bounty hunters teaming up to steal plans for the original Death Star. Consequently, this would place the movie in a period set just before Star Wars: A New Hope. Thusly, the two reports are clearly talking about different projects, leaving us none-the-wiser as to which project will be the one that is actually going ahead. It seems likely that we won’t have any of the real answers until Disney make an official announcement.
Regardless, Aaron Paul donning the famous vest and playing the wise-cracking rogue smuggler could actually work, as Paul has shown he has the acting chops, and also a talent for comedic timing. With plenty of time to work out and pull of a Chris Pratt number he could be flying the millennium falcon in the near future, espousing imbecile guff such as: “Yo, Gatorade me B****!,” and “laugh it up, fuzzballs!”
One thing we can say for sure is, at this point in time, we know very little about the trajectory the spin-offs are taking, and it will probably remain that way until the end of next year (Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still a whole year away yet). Information about J.J. Abram’s film has remained pretty tight-lipped, so I imagine Disney are going to be following the same trend with all the related Star Wars projects.
Does the thought of Aaron Paul playing a younger Han Solo sound appealing to you? What about some of the rumors regarding the proposed Han Solo spin-off? Do they sound “b******g?” Let us know peeps.
