The hotly-anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is a mere 14 months away, and there will be many DC fans, comic book fans – and movie fans in general – desperately awaiting the release of DC’s cinematic juggernaut. Directed by Zack Snyder (Watchmen, Superman: Man of Steel), the film is essentially a prerequisite to the Justice League movies and subsequently, the DC Cinematic Universe. Given that Snyder has now wrapped principle photography, the team behind the movie are now entering a lengthy post-production phase. It does seem like a long and tormenting wait, but luckily we have information from visual effects guru Joe Letteri, which is sure to whet your appetite.

We’ve seen some spectacular battles in Snyder’s previous DC outing Man of Steel including the showdown between Superman and General Zod in Metropolis. However, this is where most of the criticism stemmed from; with many complaining about the huge amount of collateral damage that occurred during the tour de force mano-a-mano battle to the death (quite literally). With the Metropolis showdown from Man of Steel apparently becoming an integral plot point in the sequel, Snyder has no plans to tone down his action set pieces.

Speaking to Collider, Letteri – who is no stranger to big Hollywood Blockbusters – spoke a little about the work he is doing on the film. Asked to compare the action sequence to the opening segment of Man of Steel, Letteri teased that the “standalone” sequence will easily stand out when viewed in the movie. Here is what he had to say:

“I can’t really give anything away, but it is a standalone sequence. And I think you will be able to pick it out when you do see it.”

All we have seen so far is the leaked footage from the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. The clip insinuates that the two titular characters are about to commence in battle, and this is the scene that everyone has been waxing lyrical about. However, Letteri has confirmed that the sequence he is working on is different from Comic-Con scene. So this leads to the question, just what other battle could possibly pique the attention of the fans more that a showdown between the titular heroes.

DCtrinity

With Gal Gadot‘s Wonder Woman now being integral to the storyline, perhaps the scene Letteri is referring to is one that has been a long time coming. Letteri could be referring to the legendary DC trinity getting together for the first time on the big screen. Possibly battling against a common antagonist in the final showdown of the movie. This seems like the only other plausible scenario that could top a battle between Superman and Batman.

Letteri’s use of the work “standalone” will certainly be raising a few eyebrows. He could be hinting a self-contained sequence that has little to do with the overall plot of the movie – possibly a sequence that ties up loose ends from Man of Steel; clarifying how Kal-El settled down to become protector of the people. There is also a rumored sequence in which Superman has to save Lois Lane in the Middle East, so he could also be referring to that.

Needless to say, with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman all garnering screen time in Batman V Superman, there sure isn’t gonna be a shortage of action set pieces and epic battles… let’s just hope there is far less collateral damage this time round, as our heroes have a duty to protect the world from evil foes.

Hopefully we are provided with a teaser soon that might give us more of an insight into Letteri’s “standalone” sequence.
