It’s not long now until Guillermo del Toro delves back into his world of earth shattering Jaegers and Kaijus battling it out mano-a-mano in the follow-up to the international Box Office smash hit Pacific Rim. However, Toro is currently revisiting familiar territory with his latest Gothic romance Crimson Tide. The film, starring Tom Hiddleston (Thor: The Dark World), Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Jessica Chastain (Interstellar), and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), is due out later this year, and we have promotional shots of three of its stars.
The promo shots are scans from the latest issues of Total Film, Empire magazine, and Legendary Pictures (who are co-producing the film with Universal). Hiddleston is known by most as ‘Loki’ from Marvel’s The Avengers and the two Thor movies; however, he has more than proved is acting chops in films such as Only Lovers Left Alive, Midnight in Paris and Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. In the promo shots he looks the part:
“playing a charismatic, yet mysterious, suitor, who wins the heart of a young woman (Wasikowska), who is swept off her feet and taken back to his ancestral home and finds that she is in for a lot more than she bargained for, including a jealous sister (Chastain), and more than a few skeletons in the closet”
Here is the official synopsis (including additional information) that was released by Legendary Pictures:
“In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers. The haunting gothic horror story is being directed by the master of dark fairy tales, Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy series, Pacific Rim). It is was written by del Toro and Matthew Robbins and stars Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam.”
Below are the new images for your viewing pleasure:
Guillermo del Toro has an amazing talent at making dark, brooding, terrifying films, juxtaposing a unique layer of aesthetic beauty. This is clearly evident in films such as Pan’s Labyrinth, Chronos, The Devil’s backbone, Hellboy and Hellboy: The Golden Army (…to some extent). Viewing these images only serves to further pique my hitherto dormant interest in what the Hobbit films could have looked like had Toro taken the reins as was initially planned. Regardless, Crimson Tide looks set to satiate fans of older del Toro fare, with beautiful cinematography, and a visual feast for the eyes.
What do you think about the first promo images peeps? Are you excited for this one?
Crimson Peak stars Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, and Charlie Hunnam, and is set to be released on October 16th, 2015.
