While fans of Game of Thrones are itching for more Thrones and binge watching past seasons to take the edge off, HBO and IMAX are delivering two episodes and a brand spanking new Season Five Trailer to IMAX screens across the country in late January. That ought to have the average Game of Thrones fan salivating. Wanna know all the when, where, and what?
The two Game of Thrones episodes featured will be season four’s final two episodes, The Watchers on the Wall and The Children.
Pamela Levine, chief marketing officer at HBO says:
The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format. We are always looking to provide fans with new and exciting ways to experience the show and viewing two key episodes, along with the new trailer, on such an impressive platform makes for a great event.
IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond chimed in saying:
IMAX always seeks innovative ways to provide moviegoers a unique and differentiated experience and today’s partnership with HBO and Game of Thrones achieves just that. This deal also furthers our efforts to offer exhibitors the opportunity to participate in alternative forms of content in a new and exciting way. As part of our broader strategy, we will continue to look for one-of-a-kind ways to provide consumers with special IMAX experiences.
The event will hit 150 selected IMAX theaters starting January 23rd through the 29th. You can check out the nearest participating IMAX theater near you over at IMAX.com, or at least you will be able to once they put the list up in a few days.
This marks the first time a television series has gone through the IMAX conversion process and screening. Could this be the beginning of a new trend? Game of Thrones is a perfect fit for IMAX with the exotic locations, costumes, and grand scope of the series. I’m not sure this type of marketing would work with any other popular television series though.
Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp and CEO of IMAX Entertainment (Say that five times fast) offers some insight into why IMAX conversion will complement Game of Thrones’ already high level of quality.
We couldn’t think of a series more fitting than Game of Thrones to be the first presented in IMAX. The scope and production quality of the show is quite remarkable, which will be highlighted even further in select IMAX locations – allowing fans, as never before, to become a part of author George R. R. Martin’s world that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss created for HBO. It has the action, storyline and epic nature that our fans seek in IMAX and we’re thrilled to team with HBO and our longtime partners at Warner Brothers to offer audiences a chance to experience it in the ultimate theatre setting joined by other fans of the series.
Is this event something you would be interested in viewing? If you’ve been getting a friend caught up in the series and haven’t finished season four yet, the IMAX viewing would be a perfect way to wrap things up.
