The casting line-up for the upcoming Suicide Squad movie is looking pretty impressive thus far. We’ve got famous faces that range from Will Smith to Tom Hardy to Margot Robbie and some of our favorite villains will be making an appearance. But one name still remains stuck in the void – who shall play the Suicide Squad’s commander, Amanda Waller? Rumors are saying that it shall be Oscar-nominee and multi-award-winning actress Viola Davis. And while that rumor has yet to be confirmed officially, Davis has stepped up and spoken a bit about the potential for the role and what she’s doing to prepare. Read on to hear what she has to say.
When asked whether she had been delving into the Suicide Squad via comic books or not, Davis had this to say:
I have not started reading them yet. I’ve read up about her but I’m working out my schedule for Suicide Squad.
Working out your schedule, you say? So you’re ready to say yes but you just need more time to figure out a way to squeeze it in? Sounds promising to me. So what did Davis have to say about the character of Waller and what makes her an attractive role to play?
I’m fascinated by her. I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction, She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.
So Davis is looking deeper into the character – another good sign that we’re going to see her jumping into the shoes of Waller and leading the Suicide Squad on their upcoming adventure. Personally, I’m pleased to see that Hollywood is looking for someone who can play a harder-edged female role without prioritizing big boobs and a tight ass. Sure, those things look good on a giant screen, but many a movie has been ruined simply because the folks in casting refuse to work outside of the box and cast someone who looks like a normal human being. One need only look at the casting of Erin Richards as Barbara on Gotham (no, I’m never going to let that one go) to realize that model-esque looks don’t magically give someone the ability to act their way out of a paper bag.
Unfortunately, the casting of Davis still isn’t official. We’re just going to have to wait until the powers-that-be at DC and Warner Bros. make some sort of statement to know the truth of it. But if my Magic 8-Ball is to be believed, ‘All Signs Point to Yes’.
Check out Suicide Squad (with whatever actress eventually gets cast) when it hits the big screen on August 5th of 2016.
What say the Nerd Readers? Davis is a fan favorite at this point, but do you think she’ll be the right one for the job? Or is there someone else you have in mind?
