It’s been a packed couple of days of Arrow news as the beloved CW superhero series was renewed for a fourth season and interest was expressed in a second spin-off from the show. But on to more practical concerns, like what’s coming up in the second half of the season and where fate might take the ragtag group of heroes and villains that populate Starling City. During the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, the CW hosted mega-panel of the costumed vigilantes, allies and agitators, from which we got some insight into what’s ahead on Arrow given the peculiar circumstances that the show left its titular hero in just before the Christmas break. Warning, spoilers be ahead.
As you may recall in last month’s “The Climb,” Oliver (Stephen Amell) seemed to be killed by Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Noble) after the big bad ran him through with a sword and kicked him off the edge of a cliff. The apparent death of the Emerald Archer leaves leaves some big, green boots to fill, and it will be up to Arrow’s various colleagues in crime-fighting to cover for his absence. In the process, Oliver’s long-time partner will finally get a costume:
Yes, John Diggle, AKA: actor David Ramsey, confirmed that he would be “suiting up in the Arrow costume in Oliver’s absence,” he told the panel (via EW). “Blarrow returns! Don’t call it a comeback,” he joked.
Of course this is not the first time “Blarrow” has appeared on the show. In the first season of Arrow in the episode “Damaged,” Diggle dressed up as the Arrow to stop some gun dealers as Oliver was laid up at stately Queen Manor, unable to leave because he was under house arrest by the police under suspicion for being the Arrow. Flashback!
In other news related to actors getting new costumes, Ramsey’s co-star Katie Cassidy confirmed again that the disappearance of the Arrow would mean the appearance of a new Canary. “I’ve been waiting for this to happen,” Cassidy said during the panel. “She goes from avenging her sister to honoring her sister to becoming her sister.”
From the sounds of things, it seems like the writers are setting up Oliver for an extended vacation for the first few episodes of 2015, or at least he’ll be away long enough to force the establishment of contingencies in the form of Diggle as the Arrow and the arrival of Laurel as Canary. The question of how Oliver will cheat death remains, even though we all assume it will be via Lazarus Pit, but at this point the more important question isn’t “how” but “when” Oliver will be back in the greed hood and taking out bad guys.
Arrow will be back (in some form) on January 21 at 8 pm on the CW.
