Mark Hamill is a tough act to follow, especially when he’s in full-blown super-villain mode, but Devon Graye is going to give it a try. The actor, who’s probably best known for playing the teenage version of Michael C. Hall‘s titular serial killer on Showtime‘s Dexter, has been cast as one of two versions of The Trickster along with Hamill on an upcoming episode of The CW‘s The Flash. The Flash has been pretty sharp with some of its super-villain casting, primary among them is Wentworth Miller who plays Captain Cold, who will be plaguing the Fastest Man Alive (Grant Gustin) in the first episode of 2015 airing on Tuesday. But while the upcoming Trickster episode is more compelling for its Hamill appearance, casting Graye as Trickster: The Next Generation should definitely be of (secondary) interest.
The casting news comes from ComicBook.com, that Graye will play Axel Walker, a criminal who takes on the identity of The Trickster in honor of an anarchy-obsessed terrorist caught and jailed in Central City years earlier. That criminal is James Jesse played by Hamill, who will be reprising his role as the villain from previous appearances in The Flash series that aired on CBS from 1990-91. In the story, Det. Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) works with Barry Allen’s father Henry (John Wesley Shipp, who played The Flash in the 90s series) to get James’ help in cracking the new Trickster case. Henry and James, conveniently, being residents of the same cell block in Iron Heights prison.
As for Graye, you may know him best as young Dexter, but he’s also appeared on American Horror Story and Alphas, and in the movies 13 Sins and Husk. The Tricksters will appear in the currently untitled 17th episode of The Flash this season, but in the meantime the Scarlet Speedster will have to deal with Captain Cold, Heat Wave, The Pied Piper, and The Weather Wizard before taking on double the Tricksters. Also lurking nearby is the Reverse Flash, of course. Very close if you believe that Dr. Wells (Tom Cavanagh) is indeed the yellow-clad running man. We shall see.
The Flash returns Tuesday at 8 pm on The CW.
