The Suicide Squad cast just got that little bit less impressive. In fact, scratch that, the Suicide Squad adaptation has just been dealt a major blow. Latest news is that Tom Hardy – who was due to play the role of the leader Rick Flagg – has had to drop out of the tent-pole adaptation. The Mad Max and Inception actor was set to co-star with Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne in the DC Comics adaptation, which is being written and directed by Fury’s David Ayer.
Despite Hardy’s exit, the film is still on schedule and will shout in Spring, aiming at an August 5, 2016 release date. But, the way things are moving, Ayer needs to find a replacement fast. And apparently he has his eyes set on End of Watch star Jake Gyllenhaal as a replacement for Hardy.
It was the Hollywood Reporter that broke the news on Hardy’s exit and The Wrap that broke the Gyllenhaal news, with The Wrap saying the reason Hardy dropped out was due to scheduling conflicts. Apparently the film he is currently shooting The Revenant, is going over schedule into mid-March. Furthermore, once Hardy has wrapped filming on The Revenant he will be too busy with promotional commitments for his summer blockbuster release Mad Max: Fury Road. Suicide Squad is set to shoot in April, so he simply can’t fit it all in.
Gyllenhall hasn’t signed for the film yet, but he would be considered a good replacement considering his recent roles (he absolutely killed it in Nightcrawler). Gyllenhaal and Ayer also worked together on End of Watch which was superbly directed with another great performance by Gyllenhaal.
What is interesting here is the amount of A-listers that seem to be attracted to the script. This is just testament that it must be something quite special to be attracting the kind of talent it has been. There is no doubt that people will be left disappointed by the fact that Hardy, who starred as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, was going to be starring in another superhero film, and was also going to show his full face.
Gyllenhaal recently shocked a few people in a photo that surfaced for his latest movie Southpaw where he looks absolutely ripped. So, there is a plus point right there, he wont have to do much to get back into shape for the role of Randall Flagg.
What do you think about Hardy’s departure? Do you think Gyllenhaal would be a good replacement?
