Do you want to know how in Lords of Kobal’s names Howard the Duck ended up in The Collector‘s ever growing miscellany of expansive paraphernalia and prized possessions in the Guardians of the Galaxy post-credit scene? For those of you who do, you’re in for a “quacking” treat because Marvel is developing a comic book story that will detail how the wise-cracking anthropomorphic noir-head got there. Now, most of you must be thinking that sounds like prequel material right? Not quite! Marvel has indicated that it is going to be a direct sequel to the concluding scene in Guardians of the Galaxy, so we can only presume that there will be details of his current predicament interspersed within new stories
We reported in November last year that Howard the Duck would be featuring in a new comic tied into the Guardians of the Galaxy story, with Chip Zdarsky (Sex Criminals) and Joe Quinones (Wednesday Comics) taking on the reins as writer and artist respectfully. However, Marvel has now announced that the mash-up between the sardonic duck and the Guardians of the Galaxy universe will occur in Howard the Duck #2. THR posted up the story description which can be viewed below:
Howard’s first big case has taken him across the universe and landed him in the clutches of The Collector! But he’s not alone as the very popular Rocket Raccoon is a prisoner as well! Have you ever seen a comic book sequel to a post-credits scene in a movie? Well, you will now!
The idea of Howard the Duck being integrated somewhat into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) sounds tantalizingly epic to me (forgetting about the George Lucas film adaptation of course). With the series honing in on the absurdity of the anthropomorphic talking, wise-cracking, case-solving duck; we are bound to endure plenty of chuckle-some page-turning predicaments unfold (hopefully in keeping with some of the underlying themes on absurdity, however, beggars can’t be choosers!). Moreover, Zdarsky has already stated that he wants new series to be less serious in tone, with the politically conscious themes taking a back seat.
Here is what the duo had to say about the character contributing to the Marvel Universe:
“There’s some fun sci-fi stuff coming up. (Howard is an alien, after all.) I’ve always been drawn (fowl joke—as in bad) to that, and have always enjoyed how Marvel handles all things cosmic.”
Zdarsky elaborated about his vision and sensibilities on how this will help set the tone of the series:
“[M]y ultimate goal is to make it funny,” Zdarsky explained to EW. “Marvel has taken chances on funny books and injecting humor into superhero titles, so I want to make sure this is worth some chuckles here and there.”
Sounds like the duo are going to give the character the justice he deserves, whilst respecting Steve Gerber and Val Mayerick’s original comics: quack-tastic!

Are you hoping that the character of Howard the Duck will be redeemed in Zdarsky and Quinones comics’? Do you think there more in store for Howard on the Big-Screen? Here’s hoping peeps!
Howard the Duck will be teaming up with Black Cat on his first mission released March 4th, with the Guardians of the Galaxy issue following on April.
