Captain America: Civil War! Now that I have your attention, let’s talk about one of the rumors about the first film in the next phase of Marvel‘s big screen development. We know that Daniel Bruhl was cast last year in Civil War, but the role he was cast to play was not revealed. On film, Bruhl has faced off against Thor actor Chris Hemsworth in Rush and future Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch in The Fifth Estate, but given that Bruhl is of German birth that seemed rather telling, but not necessarily conclusive. Now, a leak from a casting website seems to have answered the question for us, and it now appears that Bruhl will play Captain America’s second biggest adversary, Baron Zemo, in the forthcoming Civil War.
A website called www.moviecastingcall.org posted information regarding a casting call in the Atlanta area for April, looking for actors for co-star and supporting roles in the upcoming Marvel sequel Captain America: Civil War. Screen Rant did the due diligence to confirm that this is all legit, because the most telling information is revelation that Bruhl is playing Baron Zemo. The site also confirmed that the Chris Evans (Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Frank Grillo (Rumlow/Crossbones), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) and Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) make up the rest of the main cast… So far.
So who is Baron Zemo? Like the Red Skull, the villain of Captain America: The First Avenger played by Hugo Weaving, he was a Nazi scientist named Dr. Heinrich Zemo who created advanced weaponry for the the Third Reich, including Death Rays. Zemo was defeated in his evil ways by Captain America and his Howling Commandos, but he survived the war and fled to South America (like a lot of real life Nazis) with his wife and son. After being revived by the Avengers, Captain America came into conflict with Zemo again, who even formed a kind of anti-Avengers team of villains called The Masters of Evil. In the end though, Zemo got into one conflict with Cap too many, resulting in his eventual death by avalanche.
But there’s more! There was another Baron Zemo, his son Helmut who decided to pursue revenge against Cap for the his role in the death of Zemo’s father. It seems unlikely that Bruhl will play a World War II era Zemo, especially if, as we all figure, that Zemo is the movie’s big bad. Might Bruhl be playing Zemo, time traveled from World War II like Cap to fight his old nemesis again, or might Zemo be the inheritor of the Baron title and fight to get revenge on Cap for his HYDRA allies and his father? Time will tell.
Let’s take a minute to salute Marvel for casting German actors for German parts, even if they’re pseudo-Nazis. Bruhl, of course, has experience playing a Nazi as Frederick Zoller in Inglourious Basterds, but now he will join Thomas Kretschmann in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who will be established as HYDRA boss Baron von Strucker in this coming summer’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Captain America: Civil War is in theaters everywhere on May 6, 2016.
