Marvel took to ‘The View’ today and wowed comic book fans with the announcement of a new title. It will be called ‘A-Force,’ and the roster will be all-female. G. Willow Wilson, of ‘X-Men’ fame, and ‘Angela: Asgard’s Assassin’ writer Marguerite Bennett will headline while ‘X-Men’ artist Jorge Molina provides the pencils. According to the source, these queens of beatdown will take over the protection of Earth while everyone else is whisked away to Battleworld during ‘Secret Wars.’ We’re also expecting the debut of a cosmically powered heroine named Singularity. Sound enticing? Then you know exactly what to do next.
Okay, obviously this isn’t a case of leaving the ladies at home to clean up while the men fight the big fight. I’m sure we’re gonna see a lot of female heroes on Battleworld. But that’s an awful lot of ladies in that pic. Sure, it gives a chance to have B-players like Dazzler, Snowbird and Rescue do something interesting. But She-Hulk and Wasp should definitely be fighting in ‘Secret Wars.’ I guess two wars were enough for them, but it still seems kind of off. And damn, Ms. Marvel’s being left at home? Wth?
I guess you can’t run a new title without having some stars in it. So, well played, Marvel. And it looks like mutants and outcasts alike will be joining this all-woman Avengers subgroup, so that’s interesting. And I’ve never seen Nico on paper, but I’m still saving credits to recruit her on Avengers Alliance on Facebook. Here’s a cut from Wilson.
““We’ve purposefully assembled a team composed of very different characters — from disparate parts of the Marvel U, with very different power sets, identities and ideologies…They’ll all have to come together to answer some big questions: What would you sacrifice to succeed? What is being a hero worth?”
She goes on to say that Marvel’s female fanbase has been exploding recently, and moves like this one are obvious reasons why. On a deeper note – I hate the name.
