Game of Thrones, giant ice throne, Covent Garden, London, 16th February 2015

To celebrate the release of the fourth Season of HBO‘s Game of Thrones on DVD and BluRay in England, HBO brought in Glacial Art Ice Sculptors to create what might just be the most beautiful and chilling creation in London. Glacial Art Ice Sculptors documented their creation and now we’ve got some great pictures to show you how it was done. Here’s the talented gang that brought this frozen throne to life:

Last year Glacial Art helped create an ice set from the show that looked like this:

This year the creative concept this time around was left in the hands of Glacial Art. HBO loved, and quickly approved, their Ice Throne concept. It starts out very blocky but quickly takes shape as the ice is set and then carved into that recognizable form.

The construction and carving of the Ice Throne – measuring in at 2.3m tall – took sixteen full days to carve, totally by hand – and was the biggest challenge we have had to date. We used the usual selection of unusual ice crafting tools including chisels, chainsaws, steak knives, irons, angle grinders and blow torches. It had to be transported to Covent Garden’s East Piazza in twenty-five separate pieces which were fused together on arrival, two hours before the event opened up at 8am.

Most of the swords were carved into the actual throne structure, although some carved separately and then fused on in order to replicate the layered, fused-together look of the show’s Throne.

All this work was done at the Glacial Art studio inside their huge freezer. Then the work was moved to the display site where it was all put together and finished.

Notice the two ice column’s on either side in which the DVD/BluRay boxed sets of Game of Thrones Season Four are encased.

They put a faux wolf fur on the seat so that anyone could come up and sit upon the Icy Iron Throne, as well as take a guess on how long it takes for the DVD/BluRay boxed sets to melt out of those ice slabs.

Is Cersi the only one with a cold enough heart to sit upon the Ice Throne without it melting? Perhaps, but if she wants to sit upon it she’s gonna have to remove whoever is sitting upon it now.

Who sits upon the Ice Throne?
