In space no one can hear you scream….But I’d probably scream anyways if one of these Xenomorphs was after me.
20th Century Fox has apparently made a deal with director Neill Blomkamp to develop a new Alien movie, sources are saying.
Blomkamp, who directed District 9 and the upcoming Sony feature Chappie, had been trickling out a batch of radical Alien concept art to Instagram last month. The art showed, amongst other things, a re-teaming of Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and Hicks (Michael Biehn), Ripley in some kind of xenomorph suit, and the alien ship from the first film (and it’s follow-up “prequel” Prometheus) in some kind of hanger. When the art appeared, no one knew what they were looking at – a movie, a game, a flight of fan fiction?
Blomkamp talked to Uproxx, explaining that the art came out of a long-simmering desire to make an Alien movie.
Basically, what happened was, when Chappie got heavily into post-production, I could take my foot off the gas a bit. I was thinking about what I wanted to do next and I’ve been wanting to make an Alien film for like years and years.
This all came to be thanks to working with Sigourney Weaver on Chappie:
Speaking to Sigourney Weaver, when we were doing Chappie, she set off a bunch of thoughts in my head — I had come up with an idea that didn’t have Sigourney, it was a different idea. But I spent all of the shooting time with her, it was like, holy shit, that could actually be really interesting. When I came back to Vancouver, I had an entire year to work on Chappie. And when I wasn’t needed in the edit, I could think about Alien. So, I basically developed an entire movie and I did all of this artwork as well.
Now, FOX was supposedly interested in Blomkamps extra-terrestrial reboot but Blomkamp himself was uncertain if was something he actually wanted to do (he’s said in the past he’s never wanted to be a franchise guy). Blomkamp’s creative sprint was shaping down to be an abandoned and forgotten fever dream.
Details on how this all came together are uncertain at this time – and whether or not the buzz surrounding that rad concept art had anything to do with it remains to be seen – but we’re going to see a Neil Blomkamp Alien movie after all.
The director tweeted that his reimagining of the Alien universe will “officially” be his next film!
Here’s the tweet (above) in question. Variety confirmed with 20th Century Fox that a deal has been closed for Blomkamp to make an Alien movie and it’s not Prometheus 2.
IMO ever since they decided to kill off the main characters from Aliens (2) in Alien 3 the franchise has been on a downward spiral. As a sci-fi film, Alien Resurrection (4) worked, but it completely destroyed every concept from the original premise of Alien, and even Aliens. Then we had those god awful Alien Vs Predator movies, and whatever the hell that prequel was in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. As I said, downward spiral.
I, for one, have been saying for YEARS that producers should just go ahead and come out with an Aliens 2 and just continue from Aliens as if Alien 3 and Resurrection never happened.
Blomkamp concept sounds like the sequel to Aliens we’ve been waiting for since 1986!
