Cryptic Studios, the creative group that runs Star Trek Online has announced the addition of an in-game memorial to both Spock and Leonard Nimoy. It’s being reported that throughout yesterday, about 1000 players traveled to the planet Vulcan in-game to pay their respects in an impromptu memorial service around the Fountain on Vulcan.
Here’s the announcement made by Executive Producer Steve Ricossa that first appeared on the Star Trek Online forum:
I want to once again express my heartfelt condolences to the friends, family, and fans of Leonard Nimoy. Everyone at Cryptic Studios was saddened to hear of his passing and we want to make sure we never forget the cultural impact of the man or the character he played. To that end, the Star Trek Online team will implement a standing in-game memorial to Spock and Leonard Nimoy this Thursday March 5th with our regular weekly maintenance.
this way, we hope to keep his memory as alive in our game as he is in all of our hearts.
It’s a nice touch, and something that many online games are doing for those characters and celebrities that have contributed their voices and characters to the gaming world. World of Warcraft recently added an in-game memorial NPC for Robin Williams.
Nimoy provided voice work fort he game, when new players travel to a planet for the first time, they hear Mr. Spock’s voice describe the planet and it’s inhabitants. Those recordings are available for playback after each planet is visited.
When someone posts a screen shot of the memorial, we’ll post it for you here.
