It’s easily going to be the most coveted roles amongst young Hollywood actors. Yes, everyone wants to be Spider-Man, and with the hero’s new found place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s safe to say that a lot of guys of a certain age are going to be making their pitch to play your friendly neighborhood wall-crawler. Logan Lerman and Dylan O’Brien have been the leading candidates so far, but that’s not official, so as far everyone’s concerned, the role is wide open. To that end, a new potential has emerged, and he thinks it would be “fantastic” if got a shot, as it would be a nice change of pace from his day job as a semi-incestuous serial killer.

Yes, Freddie Highmore, star of A&E’s Bates Motel, likes the idea of playing Spider-Man. “Obviously I would love to be considered,” Highmore said in an interview with IGN. “That would be fantastic. I guess we’ll just see how things go.”

Highmore has proven to be a very versatile actor at such a young age with roles in drama heavy period pieces (Finding Neverland), giving voice to iconic animated characters (Astro Boy), and even playing the twin heroes in a potential franchises (The Spiderwick Chronicles). These days, Highmore is best known for playing the young Norman Bates, the character who grows up to be the titular character from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, but at the age of 23, Highmore is probably right in the strike zone to be a prime candidate for casting as Spider-Man

And if Highmore can find a way to convincingly play a young Norman Bates, then he can probably, easily, get the to heart of Peter Parker. “[Y]ou always feel like you can identify with him,” Highmore explained. “He’s that kind of guy at school who wasn’t perhaps in the really cool group, but who was extremely intelligent and managed to find confidence in being Spider-Man – in this other side to his life.”

Spider-Man is expected to appear in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, and will then be spun-off into a new solo adventure to be released in July 2017.
