mallrats-reunion

There’s been a lot of news lately about the possibility of a second Mallrats movie. Back in 1995, Mallrats was the highly anticipated follow-up to Kevin Smith‘s big break, Clerks, but it ended up bombing. Horribly. It remained a black mark on Smith’s IMDb profile for some time, and then Cop Out was released. Kidding aside though, the film has been received more warmly by fans in the last 20 years, which undoubtedly helps Smith make a case for Mallrats 2. But that’s still about two years away at least, so what are Mallrats fans to do in the meantime. How about a reunion of some of the cast for a car commercial? No, I’m not drunk.

Seriously, Smith himself recently posted a picture of himself, Jay and Silent Bob partner Jason Mewes, Mallrats co-star Michael Rooker, and the man behind Mallrats’ featured cameo Stan Lee, together, on the set of an Audi commercial. The commercial will appear on TV sometime before the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but fans can tide themselves over with this image from social media:

Not sure if Smith and the others are flashing a gang sign, or if their subliminally teasing Mallrats 2…

It’s a cute picture, and anything with “adorable” and “Stan Lee” in the same sentence is definitely worth watching, but I worry that Smith may be going overboard with the Mallrats hype. We all know that the filmmaker can talk about a project till it’s practically eaten its own tail, but there’s still the small matter of having about three other projects in the pipe ahead of it.

At this rate, by the time that Mallrats 2 is actually released, we will have talked about it so much it will have felt like it had come out in theaters, gone to DVD and aired on TBS a couple of dozen times. Of course, they say there’s no such thing as bad publicity so maybe Smith is just testing that theory. To the extreme.
