I remember my first reaction to hearing that Arnold Schwarzenegger was starring in a new Zombie movie was best summed up as, “Meah?” I was expecting the standard zombie action flick with lots of guns, guts, and standard Arnold action film one liners. What I didn’t know at the time was that Maggie was on the 2011 Blacklist for screen-plays submitted, but un-produced that year. That changes everything, and you can absolutely see it in this new trailer.
The official synopsis is short and sweet:
A devoted father stays by his daughter’s side as a disease transforms her into a zombie.
What that doesn’t tell us, but that we can see in the trailer below is that this isn’t the average Schwarzenegger action flick. It’s much more intense and emotional. Take a look and then let’s discuss it.
Damn that looks good, surprisingly good. This is really the first film for director Henry Hobson. He’s been part of a lot of films listed under various miscellaneous crew positions, but this is the first time he’s been in the center seat for a movie.
Starring opposite Arnold is Abigail Breslin as Maggie. If you’ve got that feeling you’ve seen her before you have. She’s been in a ton of movies and this isn’t her first zombie flick, you might recognize her as the all grown up Little Rock from Zombieland.
Maggie hits theater screens on May 8th, but will also be making an appearance next month at the Tribeca Film Festival. It will be interesting to see how this movie is received there.
Will you be checking it out in the theater?
