As much as most die hard turtles fans would like to forget about that Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, mass audiences loved it. Despite its schizophrenic script, befuddling narrative, and heroes in a half-arsed shell, it made money ($191 million domestically). Also, the turtles property is, of course, almost as recognizable and marketable as Mickey Mouse. So naturally, a sequel got the go ahead.
While critics and fans can expect another a rent-a-baddie villainy, a poor storyline, paper thin characters, and generic action, there is a bit of casting news that will turn heads.
Arrow‘s Stephen Amell is swapping his arrows for a hockey stick.
The actor, known to many as Oliver Queen/Arrow on The CW’s Arrow, will play Casey Jones in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. A loner who becomes an ally of the turtles and a love interest for April O’Neil, Jones is a fan favorite of the series going back to when Elias Koteas played him in the 1990 New Line pic.
According to reports, Amell was one of six actors who auditioned for the role this past weekend. But as Variety reports, Amell’s presence won him the role.
Amell will join returning cast member Megan Fox (April O’Neil) and Will Arnett (Vernon Fenwick) for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel. Producer Michael will return as well, while David Green will join the franchise as the TMNT2’s director.
Personally, I really like what Stephen Amell is doing with Arrow. And clearly the guy is top notch with both his fan-base interaction and paying it forward with some “sinceriously” amazing philanthropic efforts…near impossible not to like this guy. BUT, this is Casey Jones! I hope he does a good job bringing the crazy.
