Director Bryan Singer shared with Empire that EastEnders alumni Ben Hardy will be suiting up as Angel in his next film, X-Men: Apocalypse. The question on everyone’s mind is how they’ll deal with continuity issues from X-Men: Last Stand, where he was played by Ben Foster, nearly 20 years later in continuity. Singer teased that while Hardy was playing Angel, he’d be playing “… not a very nice Angel, and that’s all I’ll say!” Obviously we’re talking about Archangel – queue the metal guitar solo!
Singer also released to promotional photos/concept art of Angel, which show his armor suit with wings retracted and expanded:
While we’ve seen Angel in previous films, 20th Century Fox hasn’t really dealt with what most comic book aficionados consider to be the crème de la crème of Warren Worthington’s story arc, namely his relationship as Archangel with En Sabah Nur, the badass known as Apocalypse. It also really pushes the limits of how we understand Warren’s healing factor from his wings, and their own consciousness – both really interesting plot points from the comic books.
Additionally since much of Apocalypse’s story has to do with time travel, there’s a chance that Singer can do some retconning that might address continuity issues with characters like Angel, Jubilee – hell, maybe even that whole White Queen issue from the Wolverine films!
This latest X-Men film concludes the trilogy that began with X-Men: First Class, and continued with X-Men: Days of Future Past. The trilogy’s principle cast is joined by newcomers Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Lana Candor as younger/newer versions of Storm, Jean Grey, Cyclops and Nightcrawler.
X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled for release on May 27th, 2016.
