To paraphrase the great 90s philosopher Forrest Gump, Life is like a Marvel Studios production, you never know what well-known character you’re going to get: Loki cosplays Captain America in Thor: The Dark World, Thor’s Lady Sif pops up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. reference is embedded in Daredevil, and so on… But things have been kept pretty separate but equal in the realms of Marvel’s movie and TV division, although there could be some mingling of “church” and “state” on the small screen soon in the form of a pretty big cameo on Netflix’s Iron Fist. That’s right fans, let’s just say that Doctor Strange might not be the first chance you get to see Doctor Strange.
According to Bleeding Cool, the Sorcerer Supreme will pop up at some point in the 13-episode first season of Iron Fist. The Doctor himself, British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, is no stranger to TV work, but might he be persuaded to pop up in a cameo capacity on Iron Fist? The answer, from Bleeding Cool, is a definite maybe.
Whether he will be played by Benedict Cumberbatch as he is in the upcoming movie scheduled for next year, or will be shown in a way that doesn’t need such a high profile actor to be on set, I don’t know. But odds are that the Cumberbatch will at least do the voice.
Amazing! We might get his voice. I know that doesn’t sound like much, but it might be cool. I am curious as to how all this will shake out scheduling-wise. When will Iron Fist go before the cameras? AKA: Jessica Jones is currently shooting in New York for release later this year, and Luke Cage is the next project on deck, so at this rate it may be possible that Iron Fist will be out on Netflix around the time of Doctor Strange’s release late next year.
But what about Cumberbatch? You’ll recall that one of the things that was holding up his casting was scheduling issues around the very busy actor. Hence, that may be the reason why Doctor Strange may only be a voice in Iron Fist. However, the movie Doctor Strange will be shooting in New York later this fall, which may mean that there could be some overlap with the production of Iron Fist. Getting Cumberbatch on set for the latter may be as simple as putting him in a car and driving him across town for a couple of hours, but I imagine that these are some of the logistics going on behind the scenes.
In other casting news, Elizabeth Olsen let it slip at a Meet The Filmmakers event at London’s Apple Store that her Avengers: Age of Ultron character the Scarlet Witch will be appearing next in Captain America: Civil War. Olsen will join a very busy superhero cast there that includes Chris Evans (Cap), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Anthony Mackie (Falcon) and Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man).
Doctor Strange will be in theaters everywhere November 4, 2016.
