USA Today have given us our first real look at the live-action Jem and the Holograms, as they’ll appear in the upcoming feature film based on the popular ’80s cartoon.
The gallery of images centers on the animation and toy icons, providing them with an updated backstory for the “YouTube generation.” If you grew up in the 80’s and are a fan of Jem, then that last statement will have made you throw up in your mouth a little. This is Jem and The Holograms, but in name only.
Brat Pack veteran Molly Ringwald plays Aunt Bailey, the guardian of Jerrica, her sister Kimber (Stefanie Scott) and foster siblings Aja (Hayley Kiyoko) and Shana (Aurora Perrineau), who make up the Holograms group.

“It’s actually about a group of young people who are going to be inundated with this idea of fame and fortune and products and stuff, and within all that, how do you stay true to who you really are?” said director Jon M. Chu. “That’s the real soul of the movie.”
My two cents? They already did this movie… It was called, Josie and The Pussycats. I’m for all things modern but they should’ve kept this Jem movie set in the 80s. Over the top and truly (excuse me) outrageous. That would sell. Kids these days are wearing vintage-inspired stuff anyway. Might as well show them what the 80s is all about.
Jem and the Holograms will be in theaters this October.
