For a while there, Pixar was on a bit of a sequel kick with Toy Story 3, Cars 2 and Monsters University. While movie fans will note that while Toy Story seems to outdo itself with every sequel, what use did a second Cars serve? Or a Monsters Inc. prequel for that matter? Especially when you could be putting all that time and effort into, say, a second edition of The Incredibles. Well, that is changing because an essential piece of that puzzle has now fallen into place. Disney/Pixar‘s already announced The Incredibles 2, but now writer/director Brad Bird has said that it will be his next project.
While talking to Collider, Bird confirmed that he’ll be tackling the next adventure of the Parr family – Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Violet, Dash and Jack Jack – as his post-Tomorrowland endeavor.
“Yeah it feels like it to me, yeah,” Bird told Collider.
So what is it going to be about? Obviously, Bird didn’t go into any detail about that, no hint as to whether or not this will be a direct sequel, or whether or not it will unfold in real-time, reflecting the more than 10 year time difference between the original and the sequel. However, Bird says that he does have ideas for the sequel, some of them are unused from the first film, and some of them he’s been cooking up since The Incredibles release in 2004.
“Oh yeah I have pages, a bunch of pages,” Bird explained. “I had a lot of ideas for the original The Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in The Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie. I’m just focusing on getting Tomorrowland out into the world and playing with The Incredibles sandbox again.”
When the movie audience might also get a chance to play in The Incredibles sandbox again is unclear. The earliest release date could be sometime in later 2017, but it seems kind off odd to expect this movie to go from zero to release in just two years. A release of 2018 or 2019 seems more practical meaning that there will be almost 15 years between the releases of The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2. Hopefully it will be worth the wait.
Tomorrowland is in theaters everywhere a week from Friday.
