Perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to judge a book by its cover. Jared Leto’s Joker look for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad got a ton of mixed (mostly negative) feedback, but playing a role isn’t just about looking the part. Umberto Gonzales, also known as El Mayimbe from Latino Review, has reported that Leto’s portrayal of the Joker could outshine Heath Ledger’s in Suicide Squad.
“Sources are telling me that Jared Leto is going all out for his portrayal of the Joker in Suicide Squad & that he is staying in character behind the scenes on set. I’m also told his performance will rival if not surpass Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker.”
This is a serious claim, as Ledger won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight. So, what is it about Leto’s Joker that could outshine Ledger’s? Here are some quotes that have been released about Leto’s preparation for the role:
“…make the character completely his own.”
“…he knows that this role may be his most difficult ever, but he is confident that he will make his version of the Joker the best.”
“…more cerebral and comedic than what we have seen before.”
At the end of the day though, just as with Leto’s Joker look, there will be those that will love what he does with the Joker and those that will hate it. This Joker does look like a very different Joker than the one Ledger portrayed, so in that sense, is it even fair to compare them? It almost seems like a taunt to the loyal “Ledger as Joker” fans; a sort of “come see the movie and prove us wrong” marketing ploy, which is pretty genius. Only time (and very vocal fans) will tell!
