Warcraft director Duncan Jones gives us the first look at Orgrim Doomhammer, as brought to CGI life by Industrial Light and Magic. Robert Kazinsky, (Pacific Rim, The Frankenstein Code) voices and provides the motion capture work for the character who is one side of the movie’s plot-coin that examines the first meetings and subsequent battles between the Horde and the Alliance forces.
Orgrim Doomhammer, also known as the Backstabber by loyalists of Gul’dan and Blackhand, was the Warchief of the Orcish Horde during the end of the First War and the entirety of the Second War. The orcish capital of Orgrimmar, the Horde-controlled town of Hammerfall in the Arathi Highlands, and the flying battleship Orgrim’s Hammer patrolling the skies of Icecrown, are named in his honor.
Director Duncan Jones described the character saying:
We were looking for someone who would be able to perform the gruffness, the humor, and the toughness of this character.
We’ve gone beyond the point where these are just creatures in movies. We now have the technology and the ability to make new characters entirely.
While the still looks fantastic, I’ll hold my full opinion until we see some actual video with movement and talking. Even though I know it’s going to look fantastic, these are the guys who did the Hulk after all. The real problem with CGI has been the amount of it on the screen at one time. A mixture of CGI and real locations seems to help reduce that feeling of CGI overload that creeps in when everything is CGI.
Warcraft hits theater screens June 10th, 2016.
