Production is currently underway on Captain America: Civil War, and since they’re doing a lot of shooting outside in Atlanta, that means set pics, set pics and more set pics! What we’ve seen so far reveals the new Avengers – Captain America, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow and Ant-Man (?) – in action against Crossbones Brock Rumlow in his nouveau Crossbones armor. But the question, in the midst of all this and the rumored cornucopia of heroes and villains in Civil War, is what role Bucky “The Winter Soldier” Barnes plays in the plot. We know that Sebastian Stan is back, though we have yet to see hide nor hair of him on set, so what is Bucky up to in Civil War, and how does he fit into the plot? We may have an answer, and this should go without saying, spoiler alert!
To recap, when we last saw Bucky he saved Captain America (Chris Evans) from the crashing remnants of Helicarrier during the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. Then, in the post-credit scene, we see him in the Smithsonian’s Captain America exhibit trying to put the pieces of his life back together after decades of HYDRA manipulation. Now a lot’s happened in the world since then, much of it outlined in Avengers: Age of Ultron, so what’s Bucky been up to?
According to Lainey Gossip, that action scene of the Avengers versus Crossbones (Frank Grillo) is how the movie begins. Crossbones is searching for the Winter Soldier, trying to bring Bucky back to the dark side, when the Avengers intervene. The stage is set in Nigeria, which means that this fight against Crossbones is the “international incident” that the plot synopsis for Civil War refers to, the precipitation, along with the events of Age of Ultron, that convinces world governments of the need to register all superheroes.
From there, Civil War the movie will be markedly similar to Civil War the comic with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) fronting the pro-registration side, and Cap fronting the anti- side. As for Bucky, Cap’s on a mission to save his friend, but Tony Stark’s then turned on to the fact that Bucky killed his parents to protect HYDRA. This where Black Panther (Marvel newcomer Chadwick Boseman) comes in because he too is looking for The Winter Soldier, presumably for crimes against Wakanda. Everyone wants Bucky for something, except Cap, which leads into another straight-from-the-comics moment as summarized by Lainey Gossip.
“Civil War is a critical moment for Sebastian Stan and Bucky Barnes—he has to get everyone on his side by the end of this movie, because his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get a lot bigger.”
Hence, the rumors seem affirmed that the shield will be passed from Steve Rogers to Bucky Barnes with Bucky becoming the new Cap a la the end of the comic book Civil War. That’s huge, and another sign that this movie is going to be jam-packed with plot developments that will have a big effect on the Marvel movie world. How will they do it all? We’ll find out on May 6, 2016.
We’ll have more news as it develops.
