There’s a two person race in Hollywood to see which actor can play their comic book character in the most number of movies. An unofficial race, mind you, but a race just the same. Robert Downey Jr. has appeared as Tony Stark/Iron Man in six movies so far, but his seventh, Captain America: Civil War, will be released next year. That will tie him with Hugh Jackman, who’s appeared as Logan/Wolverine in five X-Men movies and two Wolverine spin-off films. So the ball is in Jackman’s court to up the ante, and while he doesn’t have as many options as Downey does, he does have options. For example, he could appear in the upcoming Deadpool movie, and if the actor playing the Merc with the Mouth is to be believed, it may actually happen.
While talking to News.com.au, Ryan Reynolds was asked about the possibility. They’ve both already worked together on the much maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in which Deadpool and Logan did fight, but Reynolds was not involved in that sequence, and many fans will note that the character Wolverine fought at the end of Origins wasn’t really Deadpool either. So will Jackman respond to Deadpool’s invitation?
“God I hope so, that would be really nice,” said Reynolds. “I dunno, we’ll see. It seems like he’s open to it, but it’s gonna be more of a scheduling issue than anything else.”
For Jackman, there are only so many chances left to play Wolverine if he is sticking to his retirement from the role in the third Wolverine adventure. His appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse has not yet been confirmed, if it’s actually happening at all, but given there’s never been an X-Men movie without Jackman, and that fact that Wolverine ended Days of Future Past in a kind of cliffhanger, it’s fairly assured that he’ll be back.
Deadpool is currently shooting in the Vancouver area, so if you should happen to see a Hugh Jackman looking fellow walking the streets, that will be a pretty good indication. Otherwise, we’ll have to what until this coming February to see the finished film and whether or not we get that Deadpool/Wolverine showdown we all deserve.
