It’s happening! It’s really happening! I didn’t believe it until I saw the picture below, but after nearly 20 years of watching, and waiting, and discussion, and rumor, filming on Independence Day 2 is finally underway. Picking up some 20 years after the original, ID4-2 will reunite many members of the cast of the first film with an eager group of brand new actors in order to fight the next wave of alien scum ready to invade the Earth. Obviously, spoilers and details are scarce in what’s actually a celebratory reunion picture of producer Dean Devlin and his star Jeff Goldblum, but for those that cynically thought this day would never come, it’s proof: This is actually happening!

Hanging with David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) 20 years later is a dream come true! #IndependenceDay

So let’s parse this picture. Well, it appears that Goldblum is shooting something against a blue screen. And he may be in the scene alone, or possibly with another cast member unseen in this photo…

Kidding aside, there is actually one thing noticeable. Goldblum’s character, cable repair man and master hacker of alien computers David Levinson, is wearing a flight suit or jacket. The patch on the suit looks like it belongs to the Black Knight squadron, which was the fighter squadron that Will Smith‘s character USMC Capt. Steven Hiller, belonged to in the first film. Interesting. What it means, I have no idea, but it seems clear that Levinson is going to be doing more up close and personal anti-alien hacking in the course of the film. If he could bring down an alien fleet with Power Book in 1996, imagine what he can do with a MacBook Air.

Goldblum will be joined by ID4 vets Vivica A. Fox, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner, as well as newbies Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth, Sela Ward, Maika Monroe, Joey King, and Charlotte Gainsbourg, as shooting on Independence Day 2 carries on for its June 24, 2016 release date. We’ll have more news about the projects as it crosses our virtual desks.
