The Hollywood Reporter is sharing that British actress, and all around fanboy favorite Tilda Swinton is in talks to join the cast of Marvel’s Dr. Strange alongside countryman Benedict Cumberbach. Could this be the strange-magic needed to ensure box office and cult-classic success? We here at Nerd Bastards are going out on a limb and saying hell yes. Lets review the facts, shall we?
In a stroke of genius, Swinton is in talks to join the cast as the Ancient One. If you happen to be a longtime fan of Dr. Strange, you’ll know based on his origin that the role of the Ancient One is rather important. He was the mentor of Strange, and the Sorceror Supreme prior to Stephen taking the mantle. He takes Strange under his wing and trains him to be his successor. Magic? The Eye of Agamotto? Energy blasts? Teleportation? Illusions? Astral Project? Yeah, he totally did all the stuff first before it was cool (hair flip).
Swinton definitely adds to the acting gravitas this film is building. She has an impressive resume of arthouse films such as The Last of England and the War Requiem, as well as breakout performances in Vanilla Sky, Young Adam, even an Oscar Award winning turn as Karen Crowder in Michael Clayton. But she’s no stranger to the strange, or gender non-conformant casting! She’s also had roles in such films as Constantine, The Chronicles of Narnia Series, Only Lovers Left Alive and Snowpiercer. Suffice to say she’s a powerhouse!
Dr. Strange is set to be released on November 4th, 2016 with Kevin Feige producing and Scott Derrick directing.
