Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures has a very interesting project in the works: a live action feature film based on the Beyblades toy franchise. Paramount Pictures has bought the rights to the figures and toys which are, for all intents and purposes, spinning tops. You pull the rip-cord on your chosen plastic spin-top and let it rip, right into your opponent’s top. The last top standing (or spinning) wins. Pretty simple, right? So simple that it has a lot of people scratching their heads over how this could possibly spawn a feature film.
Okay, that description might be underselling these things a bit. Beyblades are modeled after traditional Japanese fighting tops (which I, for one, had no idea was a thing), and have gathered over $2.5 billion in revenue. Paramount Pictures is also responsible for catapulting Hasbro’s G.I. Joe and Transformers toys into hugely successful franchises, so chances are that they know what they’re doing. What’s more, Bayblade has evolved into much more than just figurines. Their repertoire now contains various television series, animated feature films, and video games. This suggests that there is an audience out there that will be eager for the arrival of this film.
As for details of the film itself, it will revolve around a group of kids that battle each other in teams using Beyblades. The movie won’t be around for quite some time, so in the years of interim, you can bone up on your Beyblade knowledge by watching the animated episodes that can be found on Youtube.
