With comic book stories being some of the most sought-after properties for TV and movie adaptations these days, it’s only natural that some networks would want to push the envelope and develop some of the more adult-themed series. One of these happens to be Lucifer, a television series based on Neil Gaiman’s incarnation of the Lord of Hell. Fox decided it would be worth a few bucks and put it into production and we’ve even had the pleasure (?) of seeing a trailer for the show. But one group is fighting against the rising tide of Satan by trying to get Fox to pull the show before it’s even had a chance to fail… er, I mean air.
That group is a conservative organization known as One Million Moms. They’re Christian and they apparently hate the fact that anyone would dare put a human face on the evil entity known as The Devil. They’ve even started a petition to help their cause. Here’s what they have to say regarding their position on the upcoming show:
FOX has plans in 2016 to air “Lucifer,” a new series which will glorify Satan as a caring, likable person in human flesh.
The series will focus on Lucifer portrayed as a good guy, “who is bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell.” He resigns his throne, abandons his kingdom and retires to Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals.
At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel Amenadiel, has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to the underworld.
Previews of the pilot episode depict graphic acts of violence, a nightclub featuring scantily-clad women and a demon.
Sign the petition to FOX Network, urging them to drop plans to air “Lucifer.”
The petition in question contains the following header, just in case these concerned moms can’t think of anything original to say:
As a concerned mother, I am urging FOX Network to immediately cancel plans to air “Lucifer.”
The program previews mischaracterize Satan, departs from true biblical teachings about him, and inaccurately portrays the beliefs of the Christian faith.
By choosing to air this show, FOX is disrespecting Christianity and mocking the Bible.
Ah yes, those wacky religious folks! I have a suggestion for the One Million Moms, all forty thousand of them – don’t watch the show. It’s obviously not being marketed to you and just because something doesn’t sync up with your particular mythology, it doesn’t mean that you need to go in guns-a-blazin’ to ruin everyone else’s fun. Censorship is censorship, plain and simple, and no amount of religious or “moral” justification changes that.
Then again, the One Million Moms may get their wish, if not as soon as they’d like. I mean, have you seen the trailer? I love what Gaiman did with the character of Lucifer, but Fox seems to have a completely different approach. Check out the video below for CSI: The Devil in LA! Sorry, I meant to say Lucifer. That’s what they’re calling it.
