“Risky.” That’s how James Gunn‘s story treatment for the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy was described by Marvel Studios insiders “in the know.” Hardly surprising since the original Guardians was itself a gamble for Marvel, one that paid off beautifully despite initial concerns from fans and critics (oddly enough, the same concerns people now have about Ant-Man). So Gunn was given some leeway in crafting his story for Guardians 2, the script for which he’s just finished the first draft of. But expect no spoilers, or hints, or even a look at the full title on the script’s cover page, which makes us all wonder, Just how nuts is Gunn going to get with Guardians of the Galaxy 2?
Gunn flashed the money on his social networks yesterday:

Notice how the pic of the title page gets cut off there. What’s the mystery? Isn’t the name of the movie straight-up Guardians of the Galaxy 2? Apparently not, which lends suspicion that the sequel’s title will have some kind of spoiler that Marvel doesn’t want to ruin yet. A previous report has supposed that the production title “Guardians 3000” was going to used to cover production for the Guardians sequel, so might the title confirm that the team of intergalactic heroes are on their way for adventures in the future* courtesy of the recently uncovered Time Gem? Well, we don’t know because #NoSpoilers
*It’s worth noting that the original Guardians of the Galaxy comic book is set in the year 3000 and features none of the characters who have since become the core team thanks to the success of the movie. Still, a highly provocative idea.
As for the degree of latitude he had in crafting the the script, Gunn siad that while he knows the broad stokes of the ongoing storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his priority was making Guardians 2 the best, most awesome movie it can be. “I told Marvel what I wanted to do, and they said okay,” he said in a response to his Facebook post. “They gave me nothing. That said, I already know where things are basically going. But the important thing to me is GotG2 only right now – making it a great movie.”
So what will make it a great movie? Gunn enlightened the situation somewhat in a recent Periscope session saying that his script contains no Hulk, no Captain Marvel, will feautre his favorite character who is not ROM: The Spacekinght, and that Tyler Bates will return to score the sequel.
