Sometimes for actors, a job is just a job. And sometimes, part of that job requires you to go out and tell the media how pumped you are to have that job. Do all actors mean it when they say that they are “thrilled” to be playing a certain role? Probably not. For Jon Bernthal, better known to the geeky masses as Shane from AMC’s hit series The Walking Dead, being cast as The Punisher for the second season of Marvel’s Daredevil series, this role seems to be just another paycheck for him.
In a recent interview with ABC News, Bernthal said all the right things about the opportunity to play former military man turned vigilante anti-her Frank Castle:
“Oh man, it’s just a huge honor to play the part and that’s all I can say about that… I’m very thrilled and we haven’t started yet, but I’m very much looking forward to it.”
Bernthal made sure to expound upon his excitement to be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe… by spending the rest of the interview talking about his kids and his dogs. Which, absolutely, there is nothing wrong with – but c’mon, man! You’re about to join the biggest superhero grouping ever put together on screen across multiple shared movies and TV series! At least tell us you’ve cracked open a couple issues of War Zone or something!
Now, to be fair: it was brought to my attention that Jon posted a picture to Twitter recently of him holding a Punisher comic. Surely, this must be proof that he’s been a long-time fan, right? Possibly… but likely not. A closer inspection reveals that the comic he has is the graphic novel of “Welcome Back, Frank” – the beginning of the Garth Ennis run, widely regarded by most fans as the “starting point” of the Punisher’s resurgence in popularity. If I was a betting man (and I am), I’d guess that after he was cast as Frank, Bernthal was so unfamiliar with the character that he wandered over to the nearest comic book store and said “give me the Punisher stuff that the fans like the best,” and the clerk slapped this one in his hands.
Thanks for the love yall. Let’s get it. Honored. pic.twitter.com/ZQ4xNfocHH

Perhaps it’s my delicate sensitivities as a life-long Punisher fan that’s making me feel a little jaded right now. I’ll do my best to reserve judgement until we get to see Bernthal in action. But if he messes this up… there will be punishment! I’ll slot him right below Dolph Lundgren on my list of “Worst Punishers Ever” if need be – don’t tempt me, I’m crazy! I’ll do it!
Season 2 of Daredevil is slated to come our way sometime in 2016.
