So there have been a lot rumors about Indiana Jones 5 pretty much since the closing credits of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but those rumors became even more pronounced when the Walt Disney Company bought out Lucasfilm in 2012. Surely, since Disney moved so quickly to get a new (or several new) Star Wars film in development, why would they leave Indiana Jones untouched? Good question, which is why every couple of months some new rumor churns up about the movie, a new Indy, or even the return of the old Indy, Harrison Ford. But according to producer Frank Marshall, don’t believe the hype, they ain’t even thinking about a new Indy yet.
In a new interview with /Film, Marshall, who’s produced all the Indiana Jones movie this far, responded to a recently published piece of scuttlebutt on the old rumor Ain’t It Cool News about a potential release date for the next Indy. According to Ain’t it Cool, from their very reliable Lucasfilm source, Disney is looking at the fourth quarter of 2018 for a release date.
But Marshall flat out denied that that’s the case. Here’s the pertinent exchange from /Film’s interview, which will be released later today.
So that’s just Internet rumor?
Frank Marshall: Yeah. I mean, we’ve had no discussions on Indy 5 to date.
More’s the pity. Of course, what else is he going to say? It’s entirely possible that the majority of Lucasfilm’s efforts have been concentrated on Star Wars, they have four films in the pipe right now including Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which comes out in a couple of months.
It’s also possible that Disney’s not 100 per cent sure where they want to go with the project yet. There have been rumors that Ford wants to reprise as the archeologist adventurer one more time, and there have been rumors that the franchise will be rebooted with Chris Pratt as Indiana Jones, believed to be the top candidate for the job by Steven Spielberg himself. It’s likely that there’s renewed interesting in proceeding with that second option considering the record-breaking opening weekend of the Pratt-starring Jurassic World, another nostalgia driven reboot. The phrase, “strike while the iron is hot” comes to mind.
We’ll keep you posted with all the latest developments about Indy 5, when and if there are actual developments. Stay tuned.
