While I file the idea of the infamous overactor and perpetually creepy Nicolas Cage playing Superman in a Tim Burton film under the apocalypse-worthy failures bin, this documentary is high on my must-watch list. If nothing else, it’ll surely be hilarious to see Mr. Cage, who is a noted Superman fanatic, overact his way into a ridiculous, rubbery Supersuit. Luckily for all of us, Jon Schnepp endeavored to document the project’s ups and downs in the new documentary The Death of Superman Lives. Luckier still, we got our grubby little hands on the first ten minutes of footage to share with all of you fine folks.
It’s a pretty great intro and serves as more than enough motivation for me to check the rest of it out, and I’d strongly encourage all of you to do the same.
I also find it very interesting that the script for Superman Lives was written by Kevin Smith, another noted comic fanatic, and later saw a final revision by Dan Gilroy. Gilroy went on to write and direct the masterful Nightcrawler, which is easily my pick for 2014’s best film. Who knows, maybe it actually could have been pretty damn good? I guess we’ll never know, but at least we have this great documentary to watch instead.
What do you think? Could Nic Cage have pulled off Superman in the 90s? Would it have been a colossal failure? Be a part of the conversation in the comments section.
