With the transfer of the Star Wars rights to Disney, it was inevitable that the Mouse Overlord would try to capitalize on the property as much as possible. This has created joy in a great many Star Wars fans, as we will finally get the chance to see not only the original trilogy continue, but we’ll also be able to take a look into some of the other, lesser known Star Wars lore. One of those spin-off projects happens to be a film centered on one of the franchise’s most beloved characters, Han Solo. And now Solo’s solo flick has a couple of directors attached to it.
Lucasfilm made it official by announcing that the tag team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be in charge of the upcoming Han Solo movie. In case you don’t know who these guys are, here’s a list of some movies they’ve worked on in the past – The LEGO Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street.
When asked about being involved in this most legendary of franchises, the directorial pair had this to say:
This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.
Some fans may be skeptical of this decision, as most of the now-directors’ previous experience revolves around kid’s films and comedy. A movie about Han Solo may have its share of humor, but a wacky space adventure is definitely NOT what the fans will be wanting out of this. Luckily, we still have Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and Jon Kasdan (Freaks and Geeks) taking care of the script, so there is some tried-and-true Star Wars spirit lurking in the background.
And, if you can believe it’s more than just marketing blather, the Kasdan duo appears to be happy with the decision:
We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the Star Wars universe. They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.
As does the new Empress of the Star Wars franchise, Kathleen Kennedy:
It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.
The big question, however, is whether Lord and Miller can take the essence of the franchise and apply their own style to it without creating an eye-rolling experience that could potentially be worse than even Episodes I through III. Personally, I’m having nightmares of an army of Jar-Jar Binkses, singing and dancing with Ewoks while Han Solo plays drums in the background…
What say the Nerd Readers? Do you have confidence in Lord and Miller? Or does their track record make you a bit nervous? Who would your dream director be for a movie based on Han Solo?
