Shearer had tweeted that his run with the show was over, and he was moving on to pursue new avenues after his more-than-a-quarter century turn as the icon Mr. Burns and sniveling sidekick Smithers in May, saying that the show would go on without him. This was followed by a confirmation from series creator Matt Groening and producers Al Jean and James L. Brooks, saying “The show will go on and we wish him well. Maggie took it hard.”
With Shearer’s return, Fox has locked up its six leads through the end of the 2017 season. Along with Shearer, Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith and Hank Azaria will be going back into the sound booth to keep reprising the characters they first voiced… when Taylor Swift was 4 days old.
