Batgirl versus The Joker – who will win? Well, sad trombone, we already know that story so why not focus on something entirely new? Batgirl: A Matter of Family is an all new downloadable content (DLC) game for the recent Rocksteady Studios release, Batman: Arkham Knight. Time to buy another pallet of energy drinks from Costco nerds, this one’s gonna be a doozy! First look at the trailer after the jump!
If you’re the average Nerd Bastards reader, aside from having a penchant for flame wars on Facebook, you also have a fairly above-average knowledge of comic book lore. Batman is iconic – a staple for nerds and geeks everywhere. You already know that Barbara Gordon was also once Batgirl, one of Batman’s protege’s in the fight against crime. You know that The Joker shot her through the spine, and she ended up in a wheelchair, afterwhich she became a digital crime fighter known as Oracle. Yes, she’s a badass cyberninja but admirers of the Arkham Trilogy have all longed for a chance to take Batgirl for a spin. Here is your chance, people – the trailor for Batgirl: A Matter of Family:
This DLC was created by Arkham Origins‘ developer WB Games Montreal, and focuses on Batgirl attempting to rescue her father Jim Gordon who has been captured by The Joker and Harley Quinn (in the iconic Batman: The Animated Series garb). He’s being held in a new location within the game called “Seatgate Amusement Park,” a park built on an old oil rig that’s been set up as one big booby trap for the caped crusader courtesy of The Joker and his gang. The object of the game? Get to Jim Gordon without any help from Batman, and put the kibosh on all this clown nonsense!
One of the first things longtime players of the trilogy will notice is that while Batgirl isn’t as tough as Batman, she has her own style of play which integrates hacking. She’s able to take down assailants, control stuff, and even figure out puzzles all using this new feature. Entertainment Weekly recently interviewed design producer Justin Vazquez about the game, where he shared :
“Hacking is really what separates her from the other characters. It’s a gameplay mechanic with which the player can create situations for Batgirl to really shine,” Vazquez says. “Our intention was that Batgirl should be less powerful than Batman, but that Batgirl plus hacking could give her opportunities do things that not even Batman can pull off.”
The DLC will feature a ton of new quests and errata from the DC Bat-Canon which will no doubt excite new and hardcore fans alike. You’ll even get the cooperative play option with Tim Drake/Robin much like you have in the current Arkham release. Will we get some sexual tension between Babs and Timmy? Maybe that’s the next patch…
Batgirl: A Matter of Family launches July 14th for Akrham Knight DLC-season pass holders (PS4 and XBox One, $40), or it can be purchased seperately on July 21 for $6.99.
