Even though it won’t hit theaters until November 2016, the Harry Potter sorta-spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has snagged it’s fourth major cast member: actress Alison Sudol, better known to many as a modern-soft-rock singer-songwriter performing with the band A Fine Frenzy. As reported by Variety, Sudol joins the previously-announced cast of Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, and Ezra Miller.
Taking place approximately 70 years prior to the events chronicled in the Harry Potter book and film series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them tells the tale of Newt Scamander (Redmayne), a British “magizoologist” who travels to New York City in his quest to study mythical and magical creatures. Although Scamander never appeared in the Harry Potter series as a character, his name is known to fans as the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a textbook used at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Sudol will be playing the character of Queenie, a witch that crosses paths with Newt during his travels through NYC. Waterston will play Tina, Queenie’s older sister, and there will be another magical character thrown into the group’s mix (named Kredan, played by Miller) as well.
The Variety news piece goes on to mention that the only major remaining character to be cast is Jacob, a rival of Newt’s. They indicate that several actors have been considered for the role, including Michael Cera, Josh Gad, and John Kaminski. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them marks the screenwriting debut of Rowling; she will produce the film as well, along with David Hyman, Steve Kloves, and Lionel Wigwam. David Yates will direct the film.
