Neal McDonough is one of those actors, one of those “where do I know him from?” actors. He was one of the Band of Brothers, he was M.Bison in the ill-advised Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, he was Lt. Hawke in Star Trek: First Contact but like all Enterprise helsmen not named ‘Wesley Crusher’ he was doomed from the outset. More recently, and perhaps more famously, McDonough has taken up the role of “Dum Dum” Dugan, one of the Howling Commandos from Captain America: The First Avenger and Agent Carter. Well now it seems like McDonough is going from hero to villain. He will be playing the mysterious part of Damien Darhk, the big bad of Arrow‘s fourth season.
The news comes straight outta Comic Con that McDonough will be filling the big shows of Darhk, who was set-up last season as the adversary of Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Nable) who left the League of Assassins and set up his own super-secret army called H.I.V.E., which was the organization that hired Deadshot (Michael Rowe) to kill the John Diggle’s (David Ramsey) brother for mysterious reasons. The official description: “a mysterious and sophisticated villain, and an adversary of the late Ra’s Al Ghul. Now the leader of his own clandestine group, this cunning foe will prove to be one of the Arrow’s greatest challenges.”
Hm. That’s a pretty big challenge because some of those same adjectives were used for Ra’s al Ghul before the start of season three, and that was pretty much a bust. Will Darhk be the villain that Arrow deserves, or will he be the one that he needs right now? Hard to say, but interestingly McDonough has a previous Green Arrow connection, as he voiced the Emerald Archer in the animated anthology DC Showcase. He was also the voice of Deadshot in the animated Batman: Assault on Arkham. So he’s got the pedigree, but can Arrow’s writers bring the heat?
We’ll find out when the fourth season of Arrow begins this coming October on the CW.
