Oh yeah! It’s playtime in the summer of ’89 all over again! If you were a kid at that time, then chances are that two comic book heroes took up most of your creative and recreational energy: Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Well, I guess that’s five heroes, but you get the idea. In any event, these come book worlds are colliding again in an official capacity, as DC Comics and IDW Publishing have announced that they’re joining forces to bring you team-up of two of the biggest I.P.s to make the leap from comics to film and TV and merchandising. The Dark Knight will meet the Heroes on the Half-Shell, coming soon to the comic book, hobby store or newsstand near you.
A joint announcement from both companies confirmed that a crossover book called simply Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, will be released later this year. TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman will provide some cover art while the story itself will be handled by script-writer James Tynion IV and artist Freddie E. Williams II. The series will see Krang the Brain send Shredder and the Turtles across the dimensional void to Gotham City, where the Turtles meet Batman and team-up to take on the combined villainy of Shredder and some of Batman’s fiercest rogues.
Tynion called the project “a fanboy dream come true,” and that it gives him and the readers a chance to see “the world of Batman through new eyes.” Of course, this isn’t all new territory for Batman, he’s fought alligator people in the sewer too, and he’s not unfamiliar with mutants if Man-Bats, Clayfaces and KGBeasts count. So the only real question is the tone of the book, will it be fun and action-packed, grim and gritty, or something in between? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
In the meantime, check out the newly released cover art for the series below:
Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be out on comic book store shelves in November.
