Disney has been going trigger happy with their acquisition and production of Live-Action re-tellings of their animated works due to the overwhelming popularity of Maleficent & Cinderella these past two years. So their roster of films currently includes The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Pinocchio, Tinker Bell, and Cinderella’s Prince. Yeah you saw that right, The Prince is getting a prequel live-action, but they aren’t stopping there.
Disney has confirmed development of Genies, which is being described as a live-action comedy adventure that’ll reveal how the jolly blue wisp of mythical airy magic wound up in that tiny little lamp. THR reports Genies is being written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Tripp Vinson is producing. Outside of that, no talent is being slated for the film just yet and there isn’t a start date on production or release date.
It is an interesting choice to have Shannon and Swift writing the project, as they are primarily known for horror movies such as Freddy vs. Jason and Friday the 13th. However, they’ve recently branched out into comedy, working on the long-gestating Baywatch movie and the Peter Dinklage leprechaun feature O’Lucky Day. Vinson executive produced this summer’s San Andreas and was exec producer on Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and is working on the following Disney projects: Prince Charming and Bob the Musical.
Genies will explore the realm of the Genies, and explain how this particular Genie came to end up in Aladdin’s lamp. If all goes according to plan, the film will also set up a live-action Aladdin movie.
