If you’re still hoping for NBC‘s Constantine to be picked up by someone else for a second season, I think it’s time that you make peace with the idea that its not coming back as an ongoing series. I know, it’s the one blemish on another wise sterling year for comic book TV, but sadly, the time for Constantine as a series has come and gone. However, that’s not to say that this is the last of Constantine as a character, even in the form of actor Matt Ryan. A producer on Arrow recently opened up the possibility that the master of the dark arts might make his way to Starling City and the Arrow Cave (wherever that may be when season four begins).
Arrow executive producer Wendy Mericle talked to IGN on the subject recently, and seemed optimistic about the possibility. “Yeah, we really want to do it,” Mericle said. “It’s something we’ve been talking to DC about and it’s just a question of some political things, but also the actor’s schedule. We’re trying to work it out, but we don’t know 100 per cent if it’s going to happen.”
It’s funny to go back and watch Arrow evolve from a show that was relatively grounded in its initial premise of a vigilante fighting the good fight with his bow and arrow to becoming something that includes super-powers and other far-out concepts like the Lazarus Pit. Considering that Oliver’s sister was resurrected in said Pit last season, the introduction of magic and demons through the arrival of Constantine is more of a lateral move than a sudden shift.
We know that Arrow himself Stephen Amell promised to appear as his hooded alterego should another network pick-up Constantine, but if all else fails, the Arrow needing the help of a good exorcist might be a fascinating consolation prize. There is some presidence, if you’ll recall that after Millennium was cancelled, the lead character Frank Black (played by Lance Henriksen) appeared on an X-Files episode to wrap up that series. Perhaps Team Arrow is thinking along similar lines.
Either way, I think a lot of fans will be down for such a crossover, because while reaction to Constantine was mixed, most everyone agreed that Ryan made for a good John Constantine. I guess we’ll find out in due time.
