Ant Man’s paltry opening weekend box office numbers of $58M, which comes at the lower end of the scale we’ve come to expect from Marvel over the last few years ex. Thor($65.7M) and Captain America: The First Avenger ($65.1M), it still managed to leave fans abuzz in conversation due to the film’s post-credits scene. This along with some confirmation straight from Kevin Feige has us all piecing together what else we can expect from Marvel in Phase 3 of their cinematic adventures. (Spoilers Ahead)
Slashfilm asked Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige when Evangeline Lilly’s character Hope Van Dyne would don the Wasp suit and fight alongside Paul Rudd’s title hero. For those who haven’t seen the film, (Spoilers ahead),
one of the film’s post-credit scenes definitively sets up Lilly’s eventual reign as Wasp.
“It’s a good question, and it will certainly be in phase three. Where exactly in phase three I’m not sure, but it won’t be in Civil War.”
Originally the character was supposed to show up in Civil War arc, but Kevin Feige’s plans have changed that appearance:
“She was included in early versions of Civil War but there are so many characters in Civil War that we didn’t want to do her a disservice, like she flies in, ‘I’ve got the costume now’, and she flies out. With Ant-Man, and I’m not saying thats what Ant-Man does in the movie, but we already know him, we’ve already seen him. We haven’t seen her as Wasp and we don’t want to rob the opportunity of seeing her in the outfit for at least almost the first time, and seeing her dynamic with Scott in a way it could play out, so we’re saving it. But its going to be in Phase three for sure.”
So…how they plan on bringing her in on Phase Three, will remain unclear, seeing as box-office numbers for Ant Man don’t favor a possible sequel. Of course, at the end of the day, the cast roster per phase get larger and larger so how they plan on giving characters their due before the epic cinematic battles in Avengers: Infinity War or Civil War will remain to be seen. But for fans of Wasp, this is a definitive answer from the horses mouth on that characters eventual appearance in a more substantial way in the near future.
