Of course, the above headline is not meant to imply that Martin Freeman recently revealed exactly what role he was playing in Captain America: Civil War, because that would be crazy! When filming began on Civil War a couple of months, two actors were mentioned in the roll call, but there was a big question mark next to those names as to what roles they were playing. Freeman is one, but now the actor is talking about what type of character he’s playing, how he fits into the story, for how long, and yes, his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to the Tumblr blog Sherlocked-Avatar, Freeman laid out the what and the why of his Captain America character. “I’ve done a few days shooting on the Civil War film,” Freeman said. “I have 2 more days to go, so it’s a relatively small part. Within the framework of the film, he is ambiguous. I like that you can’t tell if he is a goodie or a baddie. But he works for the government and a part of his job, is to keep the superheroes and powers in check. Unless they fire me, it’s a role that will carry on.”
That sounds fine, but Sherlocked-Avatar posted this “quote” in the form of gifs with the note that this may have been more verbatim than a direct quote. Okay, so how about something more solid?
“He works for the American government,” Freeman told BadTaste.IT in a video picked up by ComingSoon.net. “He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes power I suppose. So you’re not quite sure which side he’s on. It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another. It’s the kind of character I like because it’s ambiguous and because you don’t know whether he’s good or bad. I like that area that isn’t black or white, I like the grays, because I think there’s just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.”

Okay, but all that doesn’t answer the question who, who will Freeman be playing?! The rumor has put forth the frontrunning opinion that he’ll be playing Everett Ross, an agent of the American government that’s assigned as a go-between with Wakanda and the Royal Family there (enter Chadwick Boseman as the Black Panther). But I’ll put my money on Freeman playing Henry Gyrich, who frequently serves as a liaison for the federal government, of the U.N., to the Avengers. Gyrich’s appeared on film before as an aide to Senator Kelly who Mystique replaced in the first X-Men movie, but if Quicksilver can make an appearance in the MCU, I don’t see why Gyrich can’t also.
Either way, I guess we’ll find out on May 6, 2016 when Captain America: Civil War opens in theaters everywhere.
