Hang on to your butts.
Universal Picture’s @JurassicPark Twitter account announced the inevitable sequel to the third largest movie in film history, Jurassic World today. An accompanying press release from the studio announced that Steven Spielberg would again sit in the executive producers chair, and stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard would be returning for more prehistoric mayhem. Jurassic World‘s director, Colin Trevorrow and partner Derek Connolly would be writing.
Universal Pictures has dated Jurassic Park 5, or Jurassic World 2, or the yet-to-be-titled Jurassic World sequel, for June 22nd 2018.
Jurassic World took only 40 days to break the box office record it had taken Avengers: Age of Ultron 133 day to set. It only took Universal about four hours after that news broke to announce the sequel. Speculation is bound to arise regarding the plot (perhaps there’s a secret third island?) or which dinosaurs would be returning for the fifth in the Jurassic Park series. Perennial favorite T-Rex was unavailable for comment.
The full press release is short and sweet, like the kiss of a velociraptor:
Executive producer Steven Spielberg and stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return for Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s JURASSIC WORLD SEQUEL, a follow-up to one of the biggest blockbusters in the history of cinema. Producer Frank Marshall once again joins Spielberg in leading the team of filmmakers for the next chapter in the franchise. The film will be written by Jurassic World’s director, Colin Trevorrow, and Derek Connolly. Spielberg will be joined by Trevorrow as executive producer.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 coming in 2017, The Lego Movie Sequel in 2018, and now the Jurassic World sequel too, Chris Pratt may be in need of a couple of extra bank accounts. Or maybe a pet project to fund. Chris! We need to talk about my “Blade meets Blade Runner” script! CALL ME.
