From a black suit, web armor, a brown paper bag, and many other costumes, Spider-Man has gone through more wardrobe changes than most. Regardless of his ever revolving attire, it’s that classic red and blue costume that is synonymous with the character. That motif has seen a number of variations in both comics and film. The best realized is arguably the suit Andrew Garfield wore in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We won’t get to see that suit again of course, as we have a new Spider-Man in Tom Holland, who’ll be appearing under the Marvel banner in Captain America: Civil War. With this being yet another Spider-Man reboot in under 5 years, one has to wonder if Marvel will go with a radically different design. A supposed tweet from the films directors has implied that is the case. And now a user on Reddit seems to confirm the completely different design.
A few days ago saw a couple of of mysterious tweeted images emerge from the “Russo Bros” Twitter account that teased Spider-Man’s supposed new look in Civil War, with what featured bizarre eye goggles and what looks to be a red and black suit.
Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn quickly came out stating that The Russo Bros. don’t have a Twitter account. Later, for some reason the images were deleted off the Twitter feed. It’s unclear if this is part of some Spider-Man viral marketing campaign, some rogue account that it leaking snippets of the costume and other pictures from the set of Civil War, or just some fan having a bit of fun.
Now a user on Reddit is claiming he has seen designs for the Tom Holland Spider-Man suit and offered the following details in addition to drawing up a mock pic:
Please do not even bother to ask me questions of where I saw this, proof, who I am, where I am and all that stuff. That kind of info will not only make me loose my job, I could end up in jail. So take it as you wish. You kinda just have to trust and ”believe” me when I say that…this is it. This is the suit or…well, a close representation of the suit Tom Holland will cameo in Captain America Civil war. Just wanna say that the suit is more detailed than this obviously and i did this drawing as quickly as i can in an internet cafe. I just downloaded a superhero drawing template from google images, and i just traced on it with a mouse using Sketchbook Pro. I tried my best to recall the design and draw it. I also added a few annotations to explain some of the bits on the suit…I’ll explain it better here…cause you probably can’t read it as i was writing with a mouse. So the suit is red and black. Red at top, black at the bottom. It’s bright, textured and changes colour a bit according to lighting…(kinda like the Man of Steel one…but much better in my opinion…much much better)…anyways The arms are quoted with white rubber-ish webbing. On the chest is a nice black slick spider-logo…i did my best to draw it accurately. I didn’t see the back of the suit. The eyes are…yep very very interesting. They are circle…much bigger than what I have drawn, they look like camera lens. The outside lids are black and inside there is a white glass textured looking cover. They can blink…and rotate to squint. The face is black webbed…more like a design rather than a proper spider web. There was also like 2 metal things on the shoulders with little blue lights. It has a belt buckle with a spider logo. The hands/knuckles are black and fade into red…looks really neat. The feet have a very thin light red trim. Overall the suit is amazing…besides the eyes :/ Its just beautiful and brighter to look at with a nice streamline design. Sorry for spelling and grammar.
“I know I can’t give you any proof but you’ve gotta believe me on this because i’ve seen it and i’m not lying. I’ve seen it and this is 100% because I have said it is”.
This is essentially no more credible than someone drawing their own ideas based on the now infamous Russo Tweets. Normally we wouldn’t give any mind to such an uncredited claim, but if this design is real then it is certainly different that have come before, which is the exact comment Marvel’s Kevin Feige said when talking about the new suit design 4 months ago (via Cinemablend):
We’ve already designed the costume, which is different than any of the ones that have come before. And yet ours is classic Spidey, as I think you’ll see.
Also, on the same Reddit posting, there was some talk about a reporter from Italy leaking similar designs who’s images were reportedly pulled.
Spider-Man is no stranger to audiences. People have a strong sense of what they want to see from Spider-Man. It is very unlikely that Marvel would give the character any kind of costume that isn’t wildly recognized. Additionally, Marvel has done so well with transitioning comic designs to realworld versions, while retaining the core elements of the comic design. This red and black thing is none of the above.
If we get any commentary from Marvel further denying these costume rumors, we’ll be sure to let you know.
