Despite rumors earlier this week that Channing Tatum was walking away from the negotiation table for his pet superhero project with 20th Century Fox, word is making the Internet rounds that Tatum has signed on the dotted line to star in Gambit.
THR is siting sources inside that report that there was some friction during the negotiation, but that it was nothing unusual for these types of deals. The actual extent of Tatum’s involvement in FOX’s Cinematic Universe is thought to have been the big sticking point. FOX wants Tatum/Gambit to be another Hugh Jackman/Wolverine type character that appears in his own stand alone movies as well as taking part in bigger ensemble type films. Playing that big a part is a huge commitment, Jackman has been playing Wolverine for close to 15 years and FOX is said to want the same from Tatum. That kind of commitment would require a bigger back-end compensation in most cases and that could have been another tricky item to work out between Tatum’s reps and the studio.
Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is set to direct the film based on a treatment written by Chris Claremont, who co-created Gambit along with Jim Lee, comic book artist Mike Collins was the first to draw Gambit. Josh Zetumer wrote the screenplay using Claremont’s treatment, you’ve seen his writing if you caught the Robocop reboot in 2014.
What do you think? A lot of people celebrated a bit early when news broke of the troubled talks and that Tatum might be walking away. Those hopes are dashed now. I am willing to give Tatum a shot at the role, he can’t do any worse than a lot of other actors out there that might have gotten the role if it went up for auditions.
